ultramarine
metron collaboration: Diane Jones-Parry and Annabel Ralphs.
Through an encounter with laundry blue (Reckitts Blue), and in dialogue with Holliday Pigments in Hull, and the China Clay Industry in Cornwall, the artists looked at the chemistry, structure and processes involved in the production of ultramarine, thus linking the domestic, to science, art and alchemy, and making connections between semi-precious stones, renaissance Madonnas, and industrial archaeology.
The factory at Hull has since been demolished, the china clay pits in Cornwall are gradually closing, leaving both industries in England in decline.
