My work explores issues of surface and object in painting. I am interested in the relationship between actuality and pictoriality and whether it is possible for work to hold these two elements in balance. The physicality of the pieces - their weight or fragility; their relationship to each other and to their environment is of equal importance to the evocation of light and oblique reference to land contained in the articulation of their surfaces. Oil soaked and scored plywood and card; surfaces barely skimmed or rolled thickly with oil paint hang, lean, balance and overlap.
