Helen Cauvy Foster AKA Light in the Forest is a surface pattern designer/illustrator/collage artist. She has a great love for bold abstract design, the quality of a hand drawn line and the immediacy of collage. A combination of which can be found within her current work. In todays digital world Helen creates her collage in perhaps a rather antiquated fashion by simply using paper, scissors and scalpel. After this initial hand crafted stage she often then reworks her designs digitally to create her pattern work. Helen is particularly interested in incorporating current images from a variety of printed media in her collage work, creating a reflection of the here and now.
Helen moved into Magdalen Road Studios in 2012 in order to develop further the illustration and surface pattern work. created under her studio name Light in the Forest. This studio name is derived from the traditional meanings of her name - Helen (Light) and Foster (Keeper of the Forest). Light in the Forest designs are available for license for use in various media and products. New clients are always welcomed.
Helen also runs fashion and illustration workshops for young people .
Helen originally studied fashion design, after graduating from Nottingham Trent University she went on to complete an internship at Hussein Chalayan and to work with conceptual clothing designers Vexed Generation in London. Story telling and creating clothing as a functional 3D sculptural expression of her ideas was always the main emphasis to her designs. She then moved on to specialise in menswear, undertaking a masters degree at London’s Royal College of Art, graduating in 2001. During her time there she developed a strong understanding of the power of colour and its potential to shape the narrative of her work. She also founded a freelance career within fashion illustration.
